Antique Noir

Antique Noir
"Two of my friends have been murdered. I have worked as a criminal informant. I have been shot at, chased, and spied on by both authorities and illicit organizations. I am about to leave the country as a fugitive."Lawrence Cassell lives in one of the most run down neighborhoods his town has to offer, miles away from the empty yet affluent suburbs. He is a rabid consumer of detective novels, and has always possessed an unhealthy obsession for cinema noir, two escapes he never thought would manifest themselves in a dangerous way in his own life. He rides to school on his bike. Besides the usual poverty stricken slums he manages to safely pass through, the trip is otherwise calm. Minutes later, after arriving on campus, he stumbles upon a brutal crime scene. Lloyd Sanders, a fellow classmate with a dark side, has been stabbed multiple times and hung from the school library's roof top with a noose. He is also Lawrence's brother's best friend. His sibling, Leo, is seemingly traumatized by the event. Teachers, administrators, parents, students, and the community at large are all equally shocked by the violent public spectacle. He begins asking himself who could be truly culpable. He vows to find out who did it. As Cassell digs through deception after deception, he realizes that his already solid suspicions of his town's corruption are tame in comparison to the reality of the shadows lurking underneath the provincial veneer. The number of suspects are small. One is Jenna Marguilles, a cheerleader who dated Lloyd in the days leading up to his death - and the second is Larry's brother. What are they concealing? Is there jealous rivalry? Were they the ones to commit the murder, or is another, much more dangerous group of killers, involved? Even the simplest secrets can lead to blood shed - and it will, if they cannot find the perpetrators quickly enough. A series of cover ups unfurl. He is lead on a trail of violent confrontations. Larry finds himself juggling a plethora of theories. Along with that is the discovery of the knife used to stab Lloyd. Multiple threats to him and his family from an international fugitive who soon proves himself connected to the killing of Lloyd throws everything into question. Was this man hired for murder? Or is the explanation even more macabre? What other secrets lurk behind the floorboards and in the back alleys of the county where Leo and his brother were raised? They are about to find out, at the potential cost of their lives.

Antiques Roadshow Primer : The Introductory Guide to Antiques and Collec

Antiques Roadshow Primer : The Introductory Guide to Antiques and Collectibles from the Most-Watched Series on PBS
The national treasure hunt, Antiques Roadshow is, in its third season, the most popular show on PBS. Every week it draws millions and millions of viewers to the edge of their seats as independent dealers and specialists from the country's leading auction houses appraise family heirlooms and flea market finds alike. Now this knowledge, authority, and passion is distilled in the Antiques Roadshow Primer, an introductory guide to American Antiques and collectibles. Antiques Roadshow has taught us to look for fortunes in our attics--perhaps to find, as other lucky souls have, an Anna Poole Peale portrait miniature worth $5,000 to $7,000 or a Confederate sword worth $35,000. Focusing on 11 major areas--including Furniture, Painting, Silver, Jewelry, Porcelain, and Toys--the primer addresses the essential things buyers and collectors need to know, covering vital details for each category, such as shapes, styles, and patterns, provenance, periods, and motifs. A 32-page full-color section amplifies each chapter by illustrating numerous examples of styles and techniques, and individual items are fully identified, often with their appraised value. Above all, it helps even first-timers to answer the two key question every collector must face: Is it old? Is it valuable?
